This place stands out quiet and lonely in the mall food court. However do not let this bother you. I often end up here for a light meal of their soup and their fresh wheat roll. My favorites are the curried root lentil and the Itlaian bean and kale. The red pepper, brocolli and sebago beer are great if you prefer cheesier soups. I have wanted to visit their downtown location but a carry out bowl is my preferred quik fix !

For Take-Out Soup If you are a person who is hesitant to going to any food court fares like me, you really need to give this little place a try. Although the "homebase" is in monument square in Portland, this is a great alternative to all of the greasy pizza, fattening burgers and/or old chinese fare that you will get from the typical mall food courts. Yesterday, a co-worker and I stopped in to grab some quick, yet fresh lunch. I got the New England Clam Chower with bacon pieces and then got two of the fresh and warm wheat rolls that they make throughout the day and keep soft and never have a stale one. When you get the meal, you can get the soup, a roll, a dessert and a drink. The desserts are usually locally made mini whoopie pies or cookies and/or fruit of some sort. The only draw back that they changed in the mall location is that they used to make fresh muddles strawberry lemonade and or/ home made root beer but I think that must have been to expensive to run because they have installed a fountain soda machine. This is something that really doesn't match the decor and meaning behind the freshness of the soup and home made products so, this was a bit disappointing. My friend got the sebago beer and cheddar soup with finely pureed jalapenos in the mix that gave it some smoky feel to it with a slight kick. You have to try this place if you want a better alternative to the rest of the zombie like feel of the food court.

Freeport Public Market Karmasouptra: Amazing veggie tortilla soup!!! I'm always looking vegan soup recipes that are filling. The two gentlemen running this location not only told me what was in it, but they actually wrote down the ingredients and told me how to make it! Now that is customer service!!! Thank you!!!

Unimpressed with the chowder. Too much potato, not enough clam. I thought it was a tad pricey for what they give you.

Best soup ever and worth every penny! The cheddar beer soup is my ultimate favorite. The rolls are also salty and go great with the soup! You can also add noodles for free to any soup!

As a lowly retail worker, I so appreciate being able to grab some good, well made food on a meal break. Delicious, well made, and local. Rare to find these things in a food court, and I hope they stay. Excellent.

Best soup ever, only place to eat at the Mall food court! Don't go without trying it. Highly recommended.

Love love love. Had the curried lentil and root vegetable with fresh bread/roll and unsweetened limeade with strawberries (I'm diabetic and they don't carry diet drinks). Great flavors. Hubby had New England clam chowder. He is very picky about his crackers and was happy they had the classic ones from Westminster Bakers. They do samples so you can try before you buy. 3 sizes including quart to take home. Park on the Sports Authority side of the mall and go in the food court entrance- it's on the right.

Nothing special here at all. Bit surprised at that, considering other reviews. This is typical cafeteria-style soup. The beer/cheese is okay, but just that. The clam chowder can be beat at many streetside seafood joints in this part of the country. Expensive too for the small amounts dished out, but the soup is so blah that one wouldn't want more anyway. So you just coming away thinking "I spent that for that?" It's not bad food. It's not nasty. But if you're looking for this to be some sort of unique soup spot...well, it isn't. Maybe the downtown Portland place is better?

Not only were our soups delicious (we got the curried vegetable and the Italian white bean and kale) but the employees were super nice and everything was clearly labeled as vegan, vegetarian etc. What a nice surprise in a mall food court!

It is wonderful to have this type of restaurant in a Food Court where most food is aweful, but this soup is wonderful! Try it, you wont be disappointed.

I LOVE SOUP!! I do! And not just soup, stews, chowders, bisques. When I first discovered Kamasouptra, it was at their Old Port location. I fell in love at first slurp! Only problem, it wasn't convenient for me during the work lunch hour. Then, they opened the location in the Mall Food Court. While I don't frequent the Mall Food Court often, this opening changed my tune. I've tried many of their options - beer cheddar, sweet potato corn, kale, chili, grilled cheese tomato, etc. But, my most favorite of all - the Roasted Red Pepper and Gouda! Anytime I drop in for a quick bowl, I usually know what I'm planning to get off the "regular" menu, but the minute I see this is the daily special, my taste buds jump for joy as I order a bowl. In addition to the soup, they provide the most delicious whole wheat roll, about the size of a softball with the perfect sprinkling of flaky sea salt on top. To get one of these fresh out of the oven - oh my! If you are vegetarian, vegan, gluten free, they have options for you. And, if you want to pass on that roll, there is always a fresh apple. They also have a small selection of salads to go with your soup, which I recently tried and, sadly, was not that impressed. But not so much to knock it down a star. This is a great place to get a quick, yummy bite to eat during your lunch hour. The staff is always courteous and friendly. And, for $5.99 for the bowl and roll, not too bad a deal for fresh, well made soup! Oh, and lastly, sometimes, they have whoopie pies from the Kitchen & Cork in Scarborough. These are smaller than the average whoopie pie, but just the right size to indulge a bit, but not feel too guilty. The Pumpkin is top notch!

Stopped here on a road trip in New England. Even though it was in the middle of the mall, with the great reviews, I thought I'd make a stop since I had a craving for some soup. Got the New England Clam Chowder and the Loaded Potato Soup. New England Clam Chowder was unimpressive; however, the potato soup was flavorful especially with the bacon. Rolls were the best part unfortunately.

Not having eaten mall food in years and never in Maine, what an excellent surprise. Hot soup and hot wheat roll. Nice !

I am upset that I haven't had to drive up to South Portland for work this winter, as I am missing being able to get my break at the Maine Mall. One of the biggest reasons is the soups from Karmasouptra. While they carry the standard setting example of New England Clam Chowder that is stunningly amazing, with the unctious shellfish flavor that one wants in it. Itvis one of the best examples I have come across, and then their oyster crackers, render it perfect. Yet, Some of thier vegetarian creations are simply amazing. I am missing the luxurious velvet of their butternut and pumpkin based soups as well as their non overly acidic minestrone with various vegetables starring depending on season. This is what a regional specialty restaurant should be, I just wish it was closer...

So a few days ago I decided to challenge myself to eat vegetarian meals for at least the next 30 days. To do this I have to sacrifice eating a few of my favorite barnyard friends and seek alternatives to pulled pork and hamburgers. So what's the best place to start this? A food court at the mall of course ! Fast Food, Pizza, burgers, Sub Sandwiches, Fried Chicken, Japanese, Chinese and...local Fresh Made Soup. That's right, a local good for your heart, soul warming soup kitchen in a food court. As shocking as it may be, Its really good. Kamasouptra in the Maine Mall food court will surprise you. Its down to earth staff, warm wheat rolls and hearty homemade soups will make you smile on those cold Maine winter days (and yes you can still get free samples like at all the food court establishments). Most of the soup selections are vegetarian but you have the option of adding bacon to any of them if you choose. After trying some samples my wife and I choose The Loaded ( but not with meat) Potato soup, and the Maple Roasted Butternut Squash Soup. Before I talk about the soup I need to mention the wheat rolls. They are pretty amazing. They are fresh, warm, and fluffy on the inside and just crusty enough on the outside to dip in your soup. They give you a free one with your soup but I could probably eat a dozen of them next time. The soup is the main event here. The Butternut Squash Soup is the real deal, it practically is glowing orange so you know is filled with the stuff. At first bite ( or slurp) you notice the creamy and buttery sweetness of the squash and then the after tones of maple and a cinnamon nutmeg blend of spice. Its like drinking fall foliage in a cup ( but without the leaves). The Loaded Potato soup is equally as enjoyable. It is creamy and thick with the earthiness of potatoes and chives. To really give this the loaded potato feel there is a slight tanginess to the soup that is reminiscent of sour cream. I loved this soup, even without the bacon. To finish the meal off we got a couple of mini pumpkin whoppie pies to go and of course they were good also. This was a great alternative to all the other food court junk food places and a great choice for my first day of vegetarianism.

The Grilled Cheese & Tomato is hands down the best soup I've ever had! I had it for lunch almost every day for a week. Their homemade wheat rolls are huge and when served warm, great for dipping. Also, the mini whoopie pies they feature for dessert are to die for, especially the pumpkin! It's a great addition to the Mall food court, especially for those looking for something healthy and/or locally owned/home grown.

WOW super surprised- I am always afraid of food court food- I expect greasy yuckiness- but sometimes you are in a rush, and it's the most convenient option. But this place- WOW- seriously- I am very picky about Veggie Chili and theirs ROCKED! It was great- and the roll that came with it- AWESOME!!! I was so pleasantly surprised and best of all- an adorable teenager waited on me (oh if I had a daughter!) and he was actually SO nice- and very helpful. You never get that from teenagers..never mind teenagers in a food court! Definitely worth a stop- YUMMO!
